And It Was So

Concepts100The phrase “and it was so” first appears in the Bible in Genesis 1:7: “So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.” In addition to verse 7, “and it was so” occurs in the following verses in Genesis 1.

  • in verse 9, where God directed that the water under the expanse come together in one place, causing dry land to form;
  • in verse 11, where God ordered that the earth would “produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds”;
  • in verse 15, where God declared that the heavenly lights He had created would “be lights in the expanse of the sky to provide light on the earth”;
  • in verse 24, where God’s word caused “the earth [to] produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that crawl, and the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds”; and finally
  • in verse 30, where God stated that the animals of the earth would have the earth’s green plants for food

In Judges 6:38 we see the phrase again. Here it is translated this way: “And that is what happened.” In the creation account, the phrase emphasizes God’s authority and the finality of His actions and decisions. Throughout the Bible, including Genesis 1, we are reminded that God is God.
