Jesus Calmed the Storm

This story, found in Matt. 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, and Luke 8:22-25, demonstrates Jesus' wonderful power over creation, and reveals how He is like no other! In this story, Jesus calms a raging storm on the Sea of Galilee. It was not uncommon for bad storms to come up quickly on the Sea of Galilee—this is thanks to the sea’s geographical placement, nestled in the mountains of Northern Israel.

Upon encountering one such violent storm mid-crossing, the disciples called on Jesus to help them, even though they were experienced fishermen. He had been sleeping, but at their cries He awoke and calmed the storm instantly, saying, “Peace! Be still!”

The waves died down and the wind stopped howling. Then Jesus turned to them and asked, “Where is your faith?”

The disciples had seen Jesus heal the sick and cast out demons. They were amazed and afraid to find He had power over nature, as well. Children need to understand that Jesus is Lord over all things. There is no place and no thing over which He is not Lord. This is a comforting and critical truth to learn at an early age, and encourages children to have faith in Jesus’ power.

By calming the Sea of Galilee, Jesus demonstrated to His disciples that He was no ordinary man. Jesus was, indeed, God’s Son and He is truly like no other!
