Lesson Description
Joseph was engaged to be married to Mary. The engagement was called a betrothal. Betrothal formalized the relationship between the future husband and wife in such a strong way that a divorce was required to break it. Surely he was looking forward to marrying Mary, but then he discovered, much to his shock and disappointment, that Mary was going to have a baby. Joseph could have made a public spectacle of Mary, but in the end he decided to divorce her quietly. Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to give him some very important news.
