Lesson Description

Joseph must have been excited about marrying Mary, but then he heard some disturbing news. Mary was pregnant! How could she have been unfaithful to him? What should he do? Not wanting to make the situation any more difficult for Mary than it obviously would be, Joseph resolved to divorce her quietly. In Joseph’s day and in his culture, breaking the engagement would have required a divorce.

Joseph didn’t yet know that God had caused Mary to become pregnant, so while Joseph slept, God communicated to him through an angel in a dream. He could be confident about marrying Mary! The child was God’s Son, and Joseph was to name Him Jesus. And that wasn’t all. Jesus would “save His people from their sins (Matt. 1:21).

This lesson tells the story of Jesus’ birth from the perspective of His adoptive, earthly father, Joseph. This Joseph’s Story Bible lesson for older preschoolers teaches that Mary gave birth to God’s Son, and His name was Jesus.
