Lesson Description

Mary was looking forward to marrying Joseph, to whom she was engaged. Then she received news she didn’t anticipate. The angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her she would become the mother of God’s Son!

How could this happen? She and Joseph were not yet married. God would carefully place Jesus inside Mary’s womb and cause him to grow. Mary would be Jesus’ mother, but God would be His Father. A great many questions must have remained in Mary’s mind, but she was honored and humbled that God had chosen her to give birth to His Son. Excited, she went to visit her relative Elizabeth. Elizabeth also was going to have a son, even though she was well beyond childbearing years. Mary and Elizabeth rejoiced together.

Preschoolers cannot understand all of the details of this true story, but they can understand why Mary was happy, why Jesus was special, and that God was doing something really big and wonderful! This Mary’s Story Bible lesson for older preschoolers affirms that God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus.
