Lesson Description
Timothy had been close to Paul since Paul’s second missionary journey (see Acts 16:1-5), and now Paul was writing to him from a Roman prison. Timothy was a pastor in Ephesus. The term “dearly loved son” (see 2 Tim. 1:2) underscores their strong relationship. Paul loved Timothy and prayed daily for him. Paul recalled Timothy’s tears from their last meeting and affirmed that seeing him would bring him joy. He wanted Timothy to be faithful to his calling, and he reminded him of his Christian heritage. Paul admonished Timothy to allow the Holy Scriptures and the gospel guide him. In Paul’s closing comments to Timothy we find what could easily have been Paul’s epitaph: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7). What a remarkable example Paul was to Timothy! Paul’s words and the friendship the apostle shared with this young pastor can encourage us and even the youngest among us today.
