Lesson Description
What does it mean to forgive? Forgiving someone is pardoning him or her for an offense he or she had committed. It means giving up one’s right to seek revenge, to get even, or to demand payment for what the offender owes the one who has been wronged. Forgiveness is a primary theme in Jesus’ parable of the forgiving king, which is found in Matthew 18:21-35. Not only does the parable emphasize God’s lavish forgiveness for sinners, but it also stresses the responsibility pardoned sinners have to forgive those who have wronged them. As preschoolers begin to learn about God and His love for them, they will need to develop an understanding of what divine forgiveness is, how they can receive it, and what God expects of those He has forgiven. This parable is an excellent vehicle for introducing these concepts to preschoolers, children, and even adults. Moreover, the parable provides great reminders to those who already have a basic understanding of God’s forgiveness. As you teach this lesson, be open to all the Holy Spirit desires to teach you!
