Unit Overview

We see in the pages of Scripture that God’s unfolding story is moving toward a climax. The climax we, as New Testament Christians, await is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s Kingdom. Old Testament believers, however, waited with anticipation and faith for Jesus’, the Messiah’s, first coming. In this seasonal study of Jesus’ birth, it is helpful to keep the Old Testament perspective in mind. Sin deeply marred the perfect world God had created, but God would send His Son to implement a plan of redemption and restoration. Even preschoolers can understand that God was preparing His people for Jesus’ arrival, and that when God’s Son finally came as a baby, it was right and proper to welcome and worship Him. Accordingly, we rejoice over His arrival and worship Him today!

Kingdom Perspective

The animal sacrifices offered in the Old Testament demonstrated people’s faith in God, but these sacrifices were inadequate to conquer the core problem of human sin. Still, they pointed to the ultimate sacrifice God would make for humanity in the form of His Son, Jesus, on the cross. Jesus’ arrival on earth made God’s Kingdom accessible to people as it never before had been. Further, responding to God’s Son in faith and obedience makes people citizens of God’s Kingdom, and it places His Kingdom in their hearts.
