Unit Overview

During the days of the Divided Kingdom, God continued to reveal Himself to His people and warn them of the costs of disobedience. God’s story continued to unfold as the Lord orchestrated His ongoing revelation and will, both to His people and to individuals and nations not part of Israel or Judah. Three prophets He used in offering these revelations were Elijah, Elisha, and Jonah. In their prophetic work and in surrounding events, we not only see God’s righteousness and judgment, but also His mercy and grace. This unit showcases events from the lives and ministries of these three prophets. Herein lessons abound that even older preschoolers can understand and apply.

Kingdom Perspective

The role of a biblical prophet not only involved foretelling future events (sometimes), but also forthtelling, or declaring, God’s message for the present day. It isn’t that God’s message was essentially different from one era to another, but that God, in His mercy and grace, revealed Himself to His people—and also revealed Himself to individuals and nations not affiliated with His people—in relevant ways for all people of any given time. Such is the nature of His Kingdom. God’s Kingdom encompasses people beyond Israel. We see this kind of broad Kingdom activity in the ministries of Elijah, Elisha, and Jonah.
