Bible Story: John Wrote About Heaven

Bible Text: John 14:1-4; Revelation 21:1-4,12-14,18-25; 22:1-6, 20

Suggested Learning Outcome: This mural craft will help remind children that Heaven is a real place Jesus is preparing for His people.

Supplies List:

  • Card stock
  • Blue and black construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Foil stars
  • Glue
  • Cotton balls
  • Craft jewels or sequins
  • Glitter

Teacher Preparation: Pre-cut pieces of blue and black construction paper into thirds (see image in step 1).

Instructions:

Step 1. Give each child a piece of card stock and a strip of blue construction paper. Instruct children to glue the strip to the bottom of their card stock and use their crayons and a few pieces of cotton ball to create a sky scene. Explain to children that this is the sky, the part of heaven directly above us (see image.)

Step 2. Give children the strip of black construction paper and instruct them to glue this section above the blue section. This is the part of heaven we refer to as outer space. Children can decorate this section with foil stars and glitter (see image).

Step 3. The top third of the card stock can be decorated with cotton balls and gold glitter. Allow children to build a heavenly gate with craft jewels or sequins (see image). Explain to children that this is the part of heaven that John wrote about.

Note: Children are concrete thinkers and often can’t quite capture the notion of heaven as a spiritual place. The point of this craft is to help children understand that heaven is real and not that it is “above” outer space. Use your discretion when talking about heaven with children. It is a wonderful biblical concept and reveals God’s plan to “prepare a place” for His people (John 14:2-3). Don’t get hung up on issues related to the geographic location of heaven. You’ll also want to avoid suggesting that God “is there” rather than here. God is, in fact, present with us in this world and in this life.
