Jacob’s Sons Born to Leah’s and Rachel’s Servants

After Jacob had fathered six sons by his wife Leah, Rachel gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob as a wife, and Leah gave her servant Zilpah to be married to Jacob as well. Each servant bore Jacob two sons.

  • Dan was Jacob’s fifth son and the first son born by Jacob to Rachel’s servant Bilhah (see Gen. 30:1-6). Dan means “he that judges.”
  • The second son born to Bilhah by Jacob was Jacob’s sixth son, Naphtali. Naphtali means “gained through wrestling” (see vv. 7-8).
  • After Leah saw that she had stopped having children (earlier she had born Jacob four sons) and that two sons had been born to Bilhah, Leah gave her servant Zilpah to be married to Jacob. Gad came from this union; He was Jacob’s seventh son. Gad means “good fortune” (see vv. 9-11).
  • Asher was Jacob’s eighth son and the second son born to Zilpah by Jacob. Asher means “happiness” (see vv. 12-13).
