Lesson Description
After Jesus’ death and resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples numerous times. He told them He would not be able to stay, that He had to leave because if He didn’t, the Holy Spirit could not come to them and to the world. But once the spirit came, He would convict the world “about sin, righteousness, and judgment” (John 16:7-8). Jesus also told His disciples that the Holy Spirit would give them power to be effective witnesses for Him beginning in Jerusalem and, from there, spreading across the entire world (see Acts 1:8).
At a Jewish celebration known as Pentecost, the Holy Spirit arrived and empowered Jesus’ followers, just as He had promised. Peter spoke with conviction about who Jesus was and how people should respond to Him—by repenting of their sins, believing in Him, and trusting Him to forgive their sins. Many people believed what Peter said that day. They became the early church, and they met regularly. They ate together, served one another, and helped anyone who was in need. They shared the truth about Jesus with others and demonstrated His love. Jesus used His early followers to give birth to the church. The church is still alive today, testifying to the fact that Jesus also is alive and is the source of life, hope, and peace for anyone willing to place his or her faith in Him. This Jesus Began the Church Bible lesson for older preschoolers is about the birth of the Church on the Day of Pentecost and teaches that I can tell others about Jesus.
