Lesson Description
John was an eyewitness to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Among Jesus’ 12 disciples, John was one of the Lord’s inner circle—Peter, James and John. John also was known as “the beloved disciple” (John 21:20,24), indicating his closeness to the Master.
After Jesus’ ascension, John became one of the primary leaders in the early church. He may have been a pastor in Ephesus during his senior years. He wrote the Gospel that bears his name while in that city. He also wrote the letters of 1, 2, and 3 John to warn of false teachers and to assure believers of Christ’s humanity—without undermining His deity, of course. In a futile effort to hinder the spread of the gospel, the Roman emperor Domitian exiled John to a place called Patmos. On this forsaken island John recorded his vision of God’s never ending story. We know this record today as the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation.
