Lesson Description
Joseph was called into Pharaoh’s presence, and Pharaoh asked him to interpret his—Pharaoh’s—dreams. Joseph gave credit to God for the interpretation of the dreams, then explained that the dreams meant bumper crops for seven years, followed by a severe famine for another seven years. Joseph recommended that Pharaoh put a person in charge storing grain during the years of plenty, in order to meet people’s needs in the lean years that would follow. Pharaoh gave this task to Joseph, so Joseph became second-in-command in all of Egypt. When the famine took hold, people from near and far came to Egypt to buy grain. Thankfully, the grain was available because of Joseph’s wise leadership.
Eventually Joseph’s brothers made their way to Egypt to purchase food. Joseph recognized them immediately, but they didn’t recognize him. Joseph could have sought revenge, but he did not. Even so, he did test them.
This is the story about how God brought Abraham’s descendants to dwell in Egypt. Only God could have orchestrated such a massive move, and He did it because He wanted to set the stage for the next phase of His unfolding story. We can be thankful for how He used Joseph during this strategic time, and that in trusting God, Joseph set an example for us to follow.
