Lesson Description
A dinner was given in Jesus’ honor in the town of Bethany. Martha served the meal, and her brother and sister—Lazarus and Mary—also were at the home. Lazarus, whom Jesus earlier had raised from the dead, reclined at the table with the other disciples and with Jesus.
At one point Mary entered the room. She broke an alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured its contents on Jesus’ feet, then wiped them with her hair. One disciple, Judas, obviously was angered by the gesture. He complained the oil could have been sold and given to the poor. How would Jesus respond in the midst of the tensions that permeated the room? What would He say about Judas’ complaint and about Mary’s demonstration of love? Pay close attention, because Jesus’ words in this situation have the potential to bless, encourage, and challenge us all.
