Lesson Description
A census was being taken in the Roman world, and Joseph had to travel to Bethlehem to register because Bethlehem was his family’s hometown. Mary, his wife, who was about to give birth, went with him. The town was so crowded, Mary and Joseph could not find a room in which to spend the night, so they stayed in what we would call a stable, a place where animals were kept. Jesus was born there! Mary wrapped him in cloths and placed him in the only crib that was available, a feeding trough for the animals.
Nearby, shepherds were watching their flocks. It was nighttime, but suddenly a bright light filled the sky! An angel appeared to the shepherds and announced Jesus’ birth. Then a multitude of angels joined him to praise and glorify God.
The shepherds wasted no time. They hurried off to Bethlehem and found the baby, just as the angel had said. Their lives were forever changed. The Shepherds’ Story Bible lesson for older preschoolers tells the story of Jesus’ birth from their perspective.
