Lesson Description
When a shepherd who has been charged with caring for 100 sheep counts his sheep and realizes that 99 are present and one is missing, does he bask in the reality that 99 percent of his flock have remained with the fold and that one—a mere 1 percent—is missing? No. The shepherd’s focus at this point is not on the 99 but the one; and he searches for the lost sheep until he finds it. In Luke 15:5-6, Jesus described the shepherd’s joy in locating his sheep: “When he has found it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together” and invites them to celebrate with him. The shepherd’s perspective regarding the lost sheep is like God’s regarding a sinner. Moreover, the shepherd’s joy in finding the lost sheep reflects God’s joy over a sinner who repents. Even preschoolers can understand the joy associated with finding something that has been lost.
