Nicodemus Visited Jesus Bible Lesson for Children

NT05L1 CroppedThis is a Bible lesson about Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus found in John 3. It is one of several lessons highlighting the fact that Jesus is God’s Son. The others are listed on the “Jesus is God” lessons summary page. This lesson can help kids understand Jesus’ teaching regarding what it means to be “born again.”

Lesson Title: Nicodemus Visited Jesus

Bible Text: John 3:1-16

Learning Objective: To help children understand that we need a spiritual birth in addition to our physical birth.

The Lead

Choose a free, printable activity from the list of related Bible activities that will be good to open the lesson. As children complete the activity, explain that today’s lesson is about one of many things Jesus did or said that showed he is God. Use the chosen activity to introduce the story.

Read the story from the Bible or invite a child to read the story aloud. Depending on the age and maturity of your kids, you may want simply to tell the story in your own words.

The Lesson

Select an appropriate number of printable activities from the list of related Bible activities and use them to engage your kids in the story. As they work on the activities, emphasize the following truths:

  • Jesus told Nicodemus that we must be “born again” of the Spirit (3:3, 5-8). Being born of “water” refers to physical birth while the second birth is salvation.
  • Jesus explained (v. 3:16) that God gave “His One and Only Son” to be a sacrifice. Jesus was the “One and Only Son.”
  • We are born again (spiritually) when we trust in Jesus as the Son of God and his sacrifice on the cross. (This truth may be more appropriate for older kids.)

The Landing

Emphasize for children that Jesus is the Son of God and, therefore, God Himself. Jesus came as a sacrifice for us. When we trust him we are born again and our salvation is secured.
