Unit Overview

In the Old Testament, God chose Israel to be the nation and people through whom He would reveal Himself to the world. Israel’s track record of faithfulness to God was mixed, at best, when the people demanded a king to rule over them. Saul proved to be a poor king—a leader who personally and corporately failed to obey God. Then God chose David to be king. David was a man after the Lord’s own heart. Overall, even though he was far from perfect, David demonstrated a consistent loyalty to God and an ability to lead the nation according to God’s laws. David was a man of courage, faith, and capable leadership. The Bible studies in this unit highlight several events that reflect this truth. Even older preschoolers can understand the lessons that arise from these lessons on David’s life.

Kingdom Perspective

Generally speaking, King David sought to honor the Lord, even wanting to build a temple so His people would have a permanent place to worship. God chose David’s son for this task, but He took the initiative to establish in David’s line a legacy that would culminate in the eternal reign of His only Son, Jesus Christ. God, therefore, used an earthly Kingdom to introduce His coming Kingdom to the world—and to invite people to experience His grace so they might become His Kingdom subjects.
