Unit Overview

In Hebrews 11:30, the writer of Hebrews spoke of Joshua’s faith without mentioning his name: “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after being encircled by the Israelites for seven days.” Of course, this faith wasn’t just Joshua’s, but the Israelites’ as well. In addition to what it says about faith, this verse testifies to Joshua’s effectiveness as a leader. Actually, Moses’ successor led effectively on many levels. He offered a consistent example of trusting God, and he acted on that trust. He also faithfully challenged and warned God’s people regarding obedience to the Lord in the new land. This unit explores Joshua’s faith in God and his leadership of God’s people, and it affirms the positive difference these influences made in God’s unfolding story.

Kingdom Perspective

One of the dynamics in the establishment of God’s eternal Kingdom is the defeat of all its opponents. God’s Kingdom isn’t an earthly kingdom, yet the conquest of the promised land by the Israelites under Joshua’s leadership reminds us that God either is or will be victorious over every opposing force, whether individual or corporate, regardless of its strength.
