Based on the amazing Old Testament story of Joseph forgiving his brothers, this craft will help teach children the importance of forgiveness by creating their own open arms “Forgiving Friend.”
Note: This free craft is also available as a downloadable PDF.
Bible Story: Joseph and His Family
Bible Text: Genesis 42—47
- Craft eyes
Teacher Preparation: Pre-cut pieces of cardstock measuring approximately 3 inches x 11 inches. Draw out and pre-cut the keyhole shape from the same piece of cardstock. Be sure the rectangular part of the keyhole shape measures about 3 inches in length and 4 inches in width.
Step 1. Give kids a piece of cardstock and instruct them to trace both of their hands and then cut out their hand shapes. Give them the pre-cut strip of cardstock and instruct them to color this anyway they like and then fold the strip lengthways into thirds. This will become the “arms” of their “forgiving friend.”
Step 2. Give children the keyhole shape. On the rectangular part of the shape, instruct children to write “Forgiveness Helps Everyone.” Kids can now glue this shape to the center of the cardstock strip and also glue the hands to each end of the strip.
Step 3. Give students craft eyes and crayons and instruct them to decorate the face of their “Forgiving Friend.” If you have used sturdy cardstock the arms can bend for a forgiving hug.
