God Made People Bible Lesson

OT01L4 CroppedThis is a Bible lesson about God’s creation of the world. It is the fourth of five lessons related to creation and the early chapters of Genesis. The other lessons are 1) God Made the World, 2) God Made the Plants, 3) God Made the Animals, and 5) People Disobeyed God.

Lesson Title: God Made People

Bible Text: Genesis 1:26-28; 2:7-8, 15

Learning Objective: To help the children understand that God created people in His image and they are, therefore, unique and special to God.

The Lead

Choose a free, printable activity from the list of related Bible activities that will be good to open the lesson. As children complete the activity, explain that today’s lesson is from Genesis 1 and 2 and is about God creating people. Use the chosen activity to introduce the Bible story.

Read the story from the Bible or invite a child to read the story aloud. Depending on the age and maturity of your kids, you may want simply to tell the story in your own words.

The Lesson

Select an appropriate number of printable activities from the list of related Bible activities and use them to engage your kids in the story. As they work on the activities, emphasize the following truths:

  • God created people in His image. This means we are like God in certain ways*.
  • People are the only creature made in God’s image. That makes people different from all other aspects of creation.
  • God gave people the job of ruling over and caring for the world and everything in it.
  • God considers human life to be valuable and more sacred than other forms of life.

The Landing

Help children understand that people were made in God’s image and are, therefore, unique and special to God. He also gave us the special job of caring for His world. This means every person is valuable to God and has purpose.

As the teacher, be aware that the first lesson in this series focused on God’s greatness and worthiness. The second lesson was focused on God’s goodness toward us as demonstrated by His provision of food for us. The third lesson focuses on God’s goodness toward us, but it also begins to reveal that people were created special and are different from all other aspects of creation. This lesson reveals HOW we are unique and special. The next lesson will show how people sinned because they didn’t trust God.

*Exactly what it means to be made in the image of God or to be “like God in certain ways” is a matter of debate, but it most likely refers to humanity’s intellectual creativity, its moral capacity, and it’s spiritual character. These may be matters over the heads of many children. Use your own discernment in dealing with this in class. At the very least, you’ll want them to understand simply that God made people to be like Him in ways that aren’t so for animals.
