God Made the Plants Bible Lesson

OT01L2 CroppedThis is a Bible lesson about God’s creation of the world. It is the second of five lessons related to creation and the early chapters of Genesis. The other lessons are 1) God Made the World, 3) God Made the Animals, 4) God Made People, and 5) People Disobeyed God.

Lesson Title: God Made the Plants

Bible Text: Genesis 1:9-13

Learning Objective: To help the children understand that God created the land and seas to produce plants that provide us with food.

The Lead

Choose a free, printable activity from the list of related Bible activities that will be good to open the lesson. As children complete the activity, explain that today’s lesson is from Genesis 1 and is about God creating the land, seas, and plants. Use the chosen activity to introduce the Bible story.

Read the story from the Bible or invite a child to read the story aloud. Depending on the age and maturity of your kids, you may want simply to tell the story in your own words.

The Lesson

Select an appropriate number of printable activities from the list of related Bible activities and use them to engage your kids in the story. As they work on the activities, emphasize the following truths:

  • God created plants and vegetation in order to provide us with food.
  • Like everything else God created, the land and seas and plants were “good.” (Creation is described as “good” many times in Genesis 1 in order to underscore that God was preparing a good place for people to live.)
  • The God of the Bible provides us with “good” things because He loves and cares for us.

The Landing

Help children understand that we can trust God to always do what is good for us because He loves us, just as He demonstrated in creation. We may not always understand what He is doing, but He is always good and is always doing what is good for us. As the teacher, be aware that the first lesson in this series focused on God’s greatness and worthiness while today’s story is more focused on God’s goodness toward us as demonstrated by His provision of food for us.
