God Gave Moses the Ten Commandments Bible Lesson for Kids

OT06L5 CroppedThis is a Bible lesson about God giving the Ten Commandments to Israel through Moses. It is the last of five lessons related to Moses. The other lessons are 1) God Protected Baby Moses, 2) God Called Moses, 3) God Showed His Power to Pharaoh, and 4) God Led His People.

Lesson Title: God Gave Moses the Ten Commandments

Bible Text: Exodus 19:1-6; 20:1-17; 31:18

Learning Objective: To help children understand that God (Yahweh) reveals His will to protect us and make our lives better.

The Lead

Choose a free, printable activity from the list of related Bible activities that will be good to open the lesson. As children complete the activity, explain that today’s lesson is about the Ten Commandments that God gave to Moses after He freed the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Use the chosen activity to introduce the Bible story.

Read the story from the Bible or invite a child to read the story aloud. Depending on the age and maturity of your kids, you may want simply to tell the story in your own words.

The Lesson

Select an appropriate number of printable activities from the list of related Bible activities and use them to engage your kids in the story. As they work on the activities, emphasize the following truths as appropriate for your kids:

  • God gave His people the Ten Commandments to help them know how to live so they would have a better life and honor Him.
  • God has revealed Himself to us through the Bible and through Jesus in a way that we can understand and know what He expects. We don’t have to wonder about what God wants.
  • God has spoken to us through the Bible and Jesus because He loves us and wants the best for us. This was true with Israel and it is true with us today.
  • Each of the Ten Commandments is important and conveys a principal by which we should live today. As your kids are able, talk about the various commandments and what the principal behind each is.

The Landing

Help the children understand that God has given us the Bible to help us and show us how we can live in a way that’s best for us.

Keep in mind as the teacher, that this is just one lesson about God’s delivery of the Ten Commandments to Moses. This lesson, therefore, focuses on the principal of God’s self-revelation and the fact that God still speaks today. This lesson doesn’t address the specific commandments.
